It’s Dev Conference season!
Fall is the season for orange leaves and pumpkin spice. It's also the time of year for a whole series of conferences where (as the new year draws closer) tech companies announce their 'new products'. Well, sometimes it's just advertising.
Over the past few weeks, we've had conferences aimed at developers from :
- Vercel/Next (see article here)
- Angular
- OpenAI
- GitHub
- Firebase
- Apple
- and others
There's so much to unpack, and yet ... not so much in web development. Angular announces a new start, but it's mainly a new logo. Vercel is announcing a new version of Next, but it's the "most focused version yet" ... where the work seems to have focused more on stabilising what already exists than on new features.
AI, on the other hand, shows no signs of slowing down, with all the announcements made at the first openAI DevDay. AI was also in the spotlight at the GitHub conference with Copilot.
To what extent are these timid announcements in web development the result of budget and salary cuts (see the TechCrunch article)? It's going to be an interesting year - will the sector bounce back or slow down again? We'll see, but it makes me want to take a closer look at integration with AI and the implementation of associated services. What are your thoughts on this? Have you been affected by the tightening of the tech job market? Watch this space :)
Explorations of the week
ShadCN UI
Lately, I've been taking a closer look at the work of a dev called ShadCN. He's the one who released the UI library of the same name, which looks niiiiice and which I'm currently using on my website. The library is based on RadixUI and Tailwind. Its work is used on v0.dev, a generative interface AI... which I don't have access to yet, as it's in closed beta.
Notion API
I'm also looking at how to interface with the Notion API and the viability of using Notion as a content management system (CMS). So far, it looks pretty good.
